Early Life and Career
Bud Anderson was born in Oakland, California, in 1921. He grew up in a family of aviators, and he developed a passion for flying at an early age. He joined the Army Air Corps in 1942, and he was assigned to the 357th Fighter Group. He flew his first combat mission in 1943, and he quickly proved himself to be a skilled and courageous pilot.
World War II
Anderson flew over 100 combat missions in World War II, and he shot down 16 enemy aircraft. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, the Silver Star, and the Distinguished Flying Cross. He also received the French Croix de Guerre and the Belgian Croix de Guerre.
Anderson's most famous victory came in 1944, when he shot down five enemy aircraft in a single day. He was flying a P-51 Mustang when he encountered a group of German fighters. He shot down four of the fighters in quick succession, and then he chased down the fifth fighter and shot it down as well.
Vietnam War
After World War II, Anderson continued to serve in the Air Force. He flew combat missions in the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He was promoted to the rank of colonel in 1965, and he was given command of the 355th Fighter Wing.
Anderson flew over 100 combat missions in Vietnam, and he shot down two enemy aircraft. He was awarded the Air Force Cross, the Silver Star, and the Distinguished Flying Cross. He also received the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry.
Later Years
After the Vietnam War, Anderson retired from the Air Force and went on to have a successful career in business. He wrote his autobiography, "To Fly and Fight," in 2005. He died in 2010 at the age of 89.
