David Ortiz, also popularly known as Big Papi, is one of the most celebrated baseball players of all time. He played 20 seasons in the Major Leagues, primarily with the Boston Red Sox. Ortiz was a 10-time All-Star, seven-time Silver Slugger, and three-time World Series champion. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2022.

Early Life and Career

David Ortiz was born on November 18, 1975, in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. He began playing baseball at a young age and quickly developed a reputation as a powerful hitter. In 1992, he was signed by the Seattle Mariners as an international free agent. Ortiz spent three seasons in the Mariners' minor league system before making his Major League debut in 1997.

Ortiz played sparingly for the Mariners and was traded to the Red Sox in 2003. It was in Boston that Ortiz's career took off. He quickly became one of the most feared hitters in the league, known for his prodigious power and clutch hitting.

Career Highlights

Ortiz was a key member of the Red Sox's World Series championship teams in 2004, 2007, and 2013. He was named the Most Valuable Player of the 2004 AL Championship Series and the 2013 World Series. Ortiz also played in 10 All-Star Games and won seven Silver Slugger Awards.

One of the most memorable moments of Ortiz's career came in Game 4 of the 2004 ALCS against the New York Yankees. With the Red Sox trailing 3-0 in the series and facing elimination, Ortiz hit a game-tying grand slam in the bottom of the ninth inning. The Red Sox went on to win the game and eventually the series, en route to their first World Series championship in 86 years.

Legacy

David Ortiz is widely considered one of the greatest designated hitters of all time. He ranks among the top 10 in career home runs, RBIs, and OPS. Ortiz was also a beloved figure in Boston, where he was known for his infectious personality and his commitment to the community.

Ortiz retired from baseball after the 2016 season. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2022, his first year of eligibility. Ortiz's legacy as one of the most iconic and beloved players in baseball history is secure.
