Searight's book is divided into three parts. The first part tells the stories of women who traveled to the Nile River valley in the ancient world. These women include Herodotus, who wrote about his travels to Egypt in the 5th century BC; Strabo, who wrote about his travels to Egypt in the 1st century AD; and Hypatia, a mathematician and philosopher who lived in Alexandria in the 4th century AD.

The second part of the book tells the stories of women who traveled to the Nile River valley in the Middle Ages. These women include Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, who traveled to Egypt in the 18th century; Florence Nightingale, who traveled to Egypt during the Crimean War; and Amelia Edwards, who traveled to Egypt in the 19th century.

The third part of the book tells the stories of women who traveled to the Nile River valley in the modern era. These women include Gertrude Bell, who traveled to Egypt in the early 20th century; Freya Stark, who traveled to Egypt in the 1930s; and Annemarie Schwarzenbach, who traveled to Egypt in the 1940s.
