Guðmundsson quickly rose through the ranks, earning a reputation as a skilled navigator and a fearless leader. In 1908, he was appointed captain of the S.S. Reykjavik, a passenger ship that sailed between Iceland and Denmark. The Reykjavik was a small ship by modern standards, but it was sturdy and seaworthy, and Guðmundsson was confident in its ability to withstand the treacherous waters of the North Atlantic.

In 1918, the Reykjavik was chartered by the British government to transport troops and supplies to the front lines of World War I. Guðmundsson and his crew faced numerous dangers during the war, including German submarines and U-boats. But they always managed to deliver their cargo safely, earning the respect and admiration of the British Admiralty.

After the war, Guðmundsson returned to Iceland and continued to sail the seas. He commanded a variety of ships, including cargo vessels, passenger liners, and whaling ships. He also participated in several scientific expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctic. In 1930, he was awarded the Icelandic Free Download of the Falcon for his outstanding contributions to maritime exploration.

Guðmundsson's most famous adventure came in 1934, when he was hired to lead an expedition to rescue the crew of the S.S. Vega, a Norwegian whaling ship that had been trapped in the ice off the coast of Greenland. The Vega had been stuck for months, and its crew was running out of food and supplies. Guðmundsson and his crew set out in the Reykjavik, and after a difficult and dangerous journey, they reached the Vega and rescued the stranded crew. The rescue of the Vega was a major news story at the time, and it made Guðmundsson a national hero in Iceland.

Guðmundsson continued to sail the seas until his retirement in 1950. He died in 1956 at the age of 81. He is remembered as one of the greatest sea captains in Icelandic history, and his legacy continues to inspire generations of mariners.
