Early Life and Career

Roosevelt was born in Hyde Park, New York, on January 30, 1882. He was the son of James Roosevelt, a wealthy businessman, and Sara Delano Roosevelt, a socialite. Roosevelt attended Groton School and Harvard University, where he studied history and political science. After graduating from Harvard in 1904, Roosevelt worked as a lawyer in New York City.

In 1910, Roosevelt entered politics by winning a seat in the New York State Senate. He served in the Senate for six years, during which time he became a strong advocate for social reform. In 1920, Roosevelt was elected Vice President of the United States under President Woodrow Wilson. He served as Vice President for eight years, during which time he gained valuable experience in government and foreign affairs.

The Great Depression

In 1929, the stock market crashed, triggering the Great Depression. The Great Depression was the worst economic crisis in American history. Millions of Americans lost their jobs, and the economy was in ruins. President Herbert Hoover was unable to solve the crisis, and in 1932, Roosevelt was elected President.

Roosevelt promised to take bold action to end the Great Depression. He launched a series of programs known as the New Deal. The New Deal included measures to provide relief to the unemployed, stimulate the economy, and reform the financial system. The New Deal was largely successful in ending the Great Depression.

World War II

In 1939, World War II began in Europe. Roosevelt initially tried to keep the United States out of the war, but after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, the United States entered the war. Roosevelt led the United States to victory in World War II, and he is credited with playing a key role in the Allied victory.

Roosevelt died in office on April 12, 1945, just weeks before the end of World War II. He is buried at his home in Hyde Park, New York.

Legacy

Franklin D. Roosevelt is considered one of the greatest presidents in American history. He led the country through two of the most difficult periods in its history, the Great Depression and World War II. Roosevelt's New Deal programs helped to end the Great Depression, and his leadership during World War II helped to ensure the Allied victory.

Roosevelt's legacy is still felt today. The Social Security program, which he created, provides retirement benefits to millions of Americans. The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC),which he created, regulates the financial industry. The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA),which he created, provides electricity to millions of Americans.

Franklin D. Roosevelt was a great president who made a lasting impact on the United States. He is remembered for his leadership, his compassion, and his determination to make the world a better place.
