Early Life and Career
John Diefenbaker was born in Neustadt, Ontario, on September 18, 1895. His parents were German immigrants who instilled in him a strong work ethic and a deep love of Canada. Diefenbaker attended the University of Saskatchewan and Osgoode Hall Law School before embarking on a successful career as a lawyer in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan.
Diefenbaker entered politics in 1929 when he was elected to the House of Commons as the Conservative MP for Lake Centre. He quickly rose through the ranks of the party, becoming national leader in 1956.
Prime Minister of Canada
Diefenbaker led the Conservative Party to victory in the 1957 election, ending 22 years of Liberal rule. He became Canada's 13th prime minister on June 21, 1957.
Diefenbaker's time in office was marked by both successes and setbacks. He oversaw Canada's entry into the space race with the launch of the Avro Arrow, a supersonic fighter jet. He also played a key role in the negotiations that led to the end of the Suez Crisis.
However, Diefenbaker's government was also plagued by controversy. He was criticized for his handling of the Cuban Missile Crisis and his decision to cancel the Avro Arrow project. These events led to a decline in his popularity, and he was defeated by Lester Pearson in the 1963 election.
Later Life and Legacy
After leaving office, Diefenbaker remained active in politics. He served as leader of the Opposition from 1963 to 1967. He also wrote several books and articles about his life and career.
Diefenbaker died in Ottawa on August 16, 1979. He is remembered as one of Canada's most enigmatic and influential prime ministers. His legacy is complex and controversial, but there is no doubt that he was a major figure in Canadian history.
