Valentina Tereshkova: The First Woman in Space

Valentina Tereshkova was born in a small village in the Soviet Union in 1937. She was a factory worker and an avid skydiver when she was selected to be part of the Soviet space program. In 1963, she became the first woman to travel into space, aboard the spacecraft Vostok 6.

Tereshkova's flight lasted for three days and orbited the Earth 48 times. During her mission, she conducted a number of experiments, including one on the effects of space travel on the human body. She also took photographs of the Earth and the stars, and made observations of the weather and the aurora borealis.

Tereshkova's mission was a major milestone in the history of space exploration. It proved that women were just as capable as men of traveling into space and conducting scientific research. It also inspired countless young women around the world to pursue careers in science and engineering.

Peggy Whitson: The First Woman to Command the International Space Station

Peggy Whitson was born in Iowa in 1960. She is a biochemist and a former NASA astronaut. She has flown into space six times, more than any other American woman. In 2017, she became the first woman to command the International Space Station.

Whitson's career in space has been marked by a number of firsts. She was the first woman to perform a spacewalk, and the first woman to command a long-duration mission to the International Space Station. She has also conducted a number of important scientific experiments, including one on the effects of microgravity on the human body.

Whitson is a role model for women and girls everywhere. She has shown that anything is possible if you set your mind to it. She is an inspiration to us all.
