Douglass's Early Life

Douglass was born into slavery on a plantation in Maryland. His mother was a slave and his father was a white man. Douglass never knew his father's identity, but he believed that he was the son of his master, Aaron Anthony. Douglass's mother died when he was seven years old, and he was sent to live with his grandmother. He was taught to read and write by his grandmother, and he quickly developed a love of learning.

In 1838, Douglass was hired out to a slaveholder named Edward Covey. Covey was a cruel master who beat Douglass frequently. Douglass eventually escaped from Covey's plantation and made his way to New York City.
