Politkovskaya was born in New York City in 1958, but her family moved back to the Soviet Union when she was a child. She graduated from Moscow State University in 1980, and she began her career as a journalist in 1982. She worked for several different newspapers, but she eventually found her calling at Novaya Gazeta, a independent newspaper known for its critical coverage of the Russian government.

Politkovskaya first traveled to Chechnya in 1999, and she was immediately horrified by what she saw. She witnessed firsthand the brutality of the Russian military, and she reported on the human rights abuses that were being committed against the Chechen people. Her reporting was often critical of the Russian government, and she was frequently threatened by government officials and Chechen rebels.

In 2000, Politkovskaya published her first book, A Dirty War: A Russian Reporter in Chechnya. The book was a bestseller in Russia, and it helped to raise awareness of the human rights abuses that were taking place in Chechnya. Politkovskaya continued to report on Chechnya, and she published several more books, including Putin's Russia: Life in a Failing Democracy and A Small Corner of Hell: Dispatches from Chechnya.

Politkovskaya's work was highly praised by human rights organizations, and she was awarded several prestigious awards, including the International Press Freedom Award and the Olof Palme Prize. However, her work also made her a target for the Russian government and Chechen rebels. She was threatened repeatedly, and she was attacked several times. In 2004, she was poisoned with dioxin, but she survived the attack.

On October 7, 2006, Politkovskaya was shot and killed in the elevator of her apartment building. She was 48 years old. Her murder sent shockwaves around the world, and it sparked international outrage. The Russian government initially denied any involvement in Politkovskaya's murder, but it was later revealed that several high-ranking government officials were implicated in the plot to kill her.

Politkovskaya's death was a tragic loss for the world. She was a courageous journalist who was determined to speak out against injustice. Her work helped to raise awareness of the human rights abuses that were taking place in Chechnya, and she inspired others to stand up for what they believe in. This book is a powerful tribute to Politkovskaya's life and work, and it is a must-read for anyone who is interested in human rights and social justice.
